Amelia Mak is an APHRA registered Educational Psychologist with a decade of working experience with children 5 years old and above. Having worked closely with families and schools of the local and international community, she has tackled a range of issues including behaviour and anger management, anxiety and mood-related issues, learning difficulties and peer conflicts. She has facilitated various social skills groups aimed at building resiliency and coping skills. Having a keen interest in providing parenting support, Amelia specializes in parenting trainings for families.

Experiential Process Groups for Clinicians

In-person. Conducted by Shi Min Liew, CGP, SRP

This small group training will provide participants an environment to obtain, expand and retain skills in conducting group therapy. They will learn through participation as a group member and first hand experience of group intervention.

​

Learning Objectives:

  • Identifying the group development phases and the leader's role in each phase

  • Identifying one's role in the group as well as others' roles

  • Defining and applying concepts of transference, resistance, content vs process and termination

  • Describing key process interactions in group

  • Recognizing leader behaviours that facilitate group process

  • Identifying approaches to address termination

Duration: 14.5 hours
Pre-Group individual session: 30 mins online/ in-person
Group session for 2 full days: 9am-5pm (1-hour lunch break)/ in-person

Nuts & Bolts of Group Psychotherapy

The group is a microcosm of the macro world in which we live in. Therapeutic change during group sessions is a complex process involving intricate interplay
of group interactions and human experiences. This workshop aims to equip participants with fundamental group theories and experiential learning of group psychotherapy.

  • List important considerations of setting up a group

  • Identify group leader’s tasks in various stages of group development

  • Recognize group process and resistance

  • Enhance psychoeducation and skills-based groups

  • Identify ethical considerations of group psychotherapy

  • Gain direct experience of group theories through experiential learning

Training on Dynamic Relational Therapy for Perfectionistic Behavior

This introductory course provides an overview of perfectionism, a maladaptive personality construct that increases vulnerability to psychiatric, psychological, physical, achievement and relational problems and describes our dynamic-relational treatment of perfectionism for individual or group psychotherapy formats (Hewitt, Flett, & Mikail, 2017). Participants will be introduced to our multidimensional model of perfectionism and its assessment and treatment that has evolved over 30 years of research and clinical work. The emphasis will be on clinical conceptualization, formulation, and treatment of perfectionism.

Learning Objectives

1. Become familiar with the Comprehensive Model of Perfectionism.
2. Be introduced to our model of case formulation used to guide treatment based on attachment, interpersonal, and psychodynamic theories.
3. Be introduced to a comprehensive set of measures used in formulation and measurement of treatment progress and outcome.
4. View and discuss the treatment in individual and group formats to enhance the understanding of the treatment approach.

Dr. Paul L. Hewitt is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology and Psychotherapy Program, University of British Columbia and a Registered Psychologist in British Columbia. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association and recent winner of the Donald O. Hebb Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology. Dr. Hewitt is recognized for his seminal contributions to the theory and research on the role of perfectionism as a core vulnerability factor in psychopathology, physical health, relationship, and achievement problems. He has published well over 300 research papers, books, and chapters.

Our group specialist and avid educator, Shi Min conducts several workshops on group therapy. Learning in these workshops takes form in both didactic teaching and experiential learning (live demonstration). Participants will be equipped with the relevant knowledge and skills while also observing the group concepts come alive in the here-and-now.

Giving a Speech

Balint Groups

Balint groups are facilitated and structured group discussions of clinical cases to improve and better understand the clinician-client relationship (The American Balint Society, 2016). These discussions elucidate the emotional work that promotes a relational approach to interventions. This continued professional development approach has been found to enhance empathy towards clients and reduce occupational burnout amongst clinicians. Read more here.
